Origin
The Pacific Asia College of Urban Sustainability (PACUS) was established in 2025 to address the growing need for sustainable urban development solutions in the rapidly urbanizing Asia-Pacific region. Recognizing the unique environmental, social, and economic challenges faced by cities in this region, PACUS was founded as a pioneering institution dedicated to interdisciplinary research, education, and practical solutions.
Mission
Our mission is to foster sustainable urban environments in the Asia-Pacific region by developing and disseminating innovative solutions through cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary education, and active engagement with communities, governments, and industry partners.
Vision
To be the leading center of excellence for urban sustainability in the Asia-Pacific, shaping policy and practice to create resilient, equitable, and thriving urban centers.
Motto
"Urbs Sustineri, Futurum Condere" (Latin for "Sustain the City, Build the Future")
Student Cultivation
PACUS aims to cultivate graduates who are:
- Critical Thinkers: Able to analyze complex urban challenges from multiple perspectives.
- Problem Solvers: Equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop innovative and practical solutions.
- Collaborators: Prepared to work effectively across disciplines and with diverse stakeholders.
- Leaders: Committed to driving positive change and shaping a sustainable urban future.
- Ethical Professionals: Grounded in a strong sense of social responsibility and environmental ethics.
Initial Focus: Two Schools
In its initial phase, PACUS has strategically focused on establishing two core schools:
- School of Environment and Resources: Recognizing that environmental sustainability and responsible resource management are foundational to any urban sustainability effort, this school addresses critical issues such as climate change, pollution, water scarcity, and energy efficiency. These challenges are particularly acute in the Asia-Pacific region.
- School of Urban Planning and Policy: This school focuses on the frameworks, policies, and governance structures necessary to translate sustainability principles into actionable plans and effective urban management. It addresses land use, transportation, urban renewal, and the development of appropriate policies to guide sustainable urban growth.
This strategic two-pronged approach allows PACUS to build a strong foundation in both the scientific/technical and the planning/policy aspects of urban sustainability. This initial focus provides a coherent and impactful starting point, enabling the college to attract top faculty and students, establish a clear identity, and build momentum for future expansion into other related disciplines.
